Ron Rankin AM
Australian volunteer surf lifesaver
Ron Rankin has been a volunteer member of Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) for 48 years and was on the Board of Directors for 25 years.
He was national President from 2001–10 during which time the organisation's membership almost doubled in size to 153,000 members and 800,000 supporters. SLSA, through its volunteer commitment and value of lives saved, now contributes more than $3.5 billion each year to the Australian economy.
Ron has also been the Chairman of the SLSA National Helicopter Operations Board and Chairman of the Sydney based Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopters operated by SLSA.
He has made a significant contribution to drowning prevention and lifesaving development in the international arena and was a Director of the International Lifesaving Federation and Vice President of the federation's Asia–Pacific region for a decade. Ron's dedication and commitment to an Australian tradition has saved thousands of lives. He was also instrumental in lifesaving development programs in 23 other countries.
His outstanding service to the community and dedication has been recognised with numerous awards including an Order of Australia (AM) as well as being awarded the Queensland Senior Australian of the Year in 2010.
